HYMN 53                        PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY

Scripture Reading — Isaiah 54:1-8

  1  “Sing, O barren one, who did not bear;

break forth into singing and cry aloud,

you who have not been in labor!

      For the children of the desolate one will be more

than the children of her who is married,” says the Lord.

  2   “Enlarge the place of your tent,

and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out;

      do not hold back; lengthen your cords

and strengthen your stakes.

  3   For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left,

and your offspring will possess the nations

and will people the desolate cities.

  4   “Fear not, for you will not be ashamed;

be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced;

      for you will forget the shame of your youth,

and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.

  5   For your Maker is your husband,

the Lord of hosts is his name;

      and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer,

the God of the whole earth he is called.

  6   For the Lord has called you

like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit,

      like a wife of youth when she is cast off,

says your God.

  7   For a brief moment I deserted you,

but with great compassion I will gather you.

  8   In overflowing anger for a moment

I hid my face from you,

      but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,”

says the Lord, your Redeemer.

Hymn 42                             EL-SHADDAI                         Michael Card; 1981; John Thompson, 1981

(For the music please use the Trinity Hymnal in the pew rack)

El-Shaddai, El-Shaddai, El-Elyon na Adonai,

Age to age you’re still the same, by the power of the name.

El-Shaddai, El-Shaddai, Erkamka na Adonai,

We will praise and lift you high, El-Shaddai.

Through your love and through the ram

You saved the son of Abraham;

Through the power of your hand you turned the sea into dry land.

To the outcast on her knees you were the God who really sees,

And by your might you set your children free.

Through the years you made it clear that the time of Christ was near,

Though the people couldn’t see what Messiah ought to be.

Though your Word contained the plan, they just could not understand,

Your most awesome work was done in your Son.

El-Shaddai, El-Shaddai, El-Elyon na Adonai,

Age to age you’re still the same, by the power of the name.

El-Shaddai, El-Shaddai, Erkamka na Adonai,

I will praise you till I die, El-Shaddai.

Words of Assurance — Galatians 4:4–7 (ESV)

4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Freedom in Christ: How an Orphan Becomes an Heir

21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. 24 Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written,

      “Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear;

break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor!

      For the children of the desolate one will be more

than those of the one who has a husband.”

28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.
